Marti Pellow
Marti Pellow Marti Pellow’s career has been extraordinary to say the least; it has so far seen the second longest Number One in UK chart history, one of the top five most played songs of all time in UK broadcast history, one of the top five highest selling singles in UK history, consistent chart topping multi-platinum album sales, the largest free concert ever in the British Isles, the achievement of every major award in the British music industry, the honour of having the White House proclaim a day be named after you, the breaking of box office records, the starring in huge hit musical theatre productions in London’s West End and on Broadway, the playing to hundreds of thousands on international Arena tours to the selling out of intimate jazz clubs, this is a career of monumental achievement and at the heart of all this is the uncompromising dedication and passion of the performer and singer songwriter Marti Pellow.

Marti’s career began as a teenager when he formed the band Wet Wet Wet with his school friends, which went on to become one of the most successful and highly acclaimed bands in British pop history. Marti’s solo career has been as equally exceptional, releasing multi-platinum albums, sold-out concert performances and starring in record breaking theatre productions.

Marti started his solo career where he’d begun his Wet Wet Wet recording career, making the album Smile with the legendary soul and R&B producer Willie Mitchell in Memphis, Tennessee, a place that Marti frequently returns to, including for the highly acclaimed Moonlight Over Memphis album. While in Memphis Marti was honoured with the Keys to the City, and The White House even proclaimed the 9th May - Marti Pellow Day in Memphis – honours shared by the likes of Nelson Mandella and BB King!

Marti’s sold out arenas, concert halls, theatres and jazz clubs throughout his touring career, but it was while performing a charity gig for The Teenage Cancer Trust at The Royal Albert Hall in 2002, that he was approached by the American producers of the hit musical Chicago and invited to consider playing the lead role of Billy Flynn. Marti didn’t take long to decide – and by accepting the role started an extraordinary new career in musical theatre. He took the West End by storm, before going to New York to star on Broadway. He went on to break box office records on a major national UK tour, as well taking the part to Tokyo, Japan.

Marti then realised a life-long dream, working with Jim Watson and some of the finest musicians in jazz today, by taking some of the great classic jazz standards, giving them his own very personal interpretations and selling out a week at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, headlining the Dubai Jazz Festival, The Cheltenham Jazz Festival and a sold-out UK theatre tour while releasing the truly outstanding jazz album: Sentimental Me. As the Daily Mail put it: “From pop prince to jazz superstar overnight”.

His musical theatre career continued with the role of The Arbiter in the 25th anniversary production of Chess In Concert, performed and recorded at The Royal Albert Hall, it was released globally in the cinema, on tv, dvd and cd throughout 2009, and starred a stellar cast of international theatre and recording artists. Marti then spent the next ten months playing the extraordinarily devilish part of Daryl Van Horne in the box office smash Witches of Eastwick going even further to establish him as one of the great leading men in entertainment today.

Marti then went onto make an extraordinary sixth solo album, Boulevard of Life, which is scheduled to be released later this year.

Over last Summer Marti performed in front of forty thousand people in Hyde Park for the BBC’s Thank You For The Music: A Celebration of The Music of ABBA, he played a spectacular concert with Ireland’s RTE Orchestra at Dublin’s National Concert Hall, and further concerts are planned for later this year. He’s also begun work on the spectacular new Latin dance musical, Sacred Flame, by the creator of Lord of the Dance, it’s international arena tour will premier at The 02.

Marti has now been invited back to revive his role as Billy Flynn in an exclusive six week tour of Chicago in early 2010, an opportunity he feels to breathe fresh life into the character and to find new ways of playing this great role.
